Western Blot

Western blotting, also known as immunoblot, is a molecular biological technique to detect a protein in complex samples according to the specific binding of antigen and antibody. This method is an immunochemical technology developed on the basis of gel electrophoresis and solid phase immunoassay. Due to the high resolution of SDS-PAGE and the high specificity and sensitivity of solid-phase immunoassay, Western blotting has become a conventional technique for protein analysis. Western blotting is often used to identify a protein and can analyze the protein qualitatively and semi-quantitatively.

Example

The function of NRSF in progression of ovarian cancer

Western blotting assay showed that the expression of NRSF is significantly elevated in 7 ovarian cancer cell lines (SKOV3, OVCAR-3, CaoV-3, TOV-21G, ES2, OV-90 and PA-1) compared to normal human ovarian surface epithelial (HOSE) cells. In accordance with that, the expression of NRSF is drastically upregulated in fresh ovarian cancer tissues compared with normal ovary tissues both at mRNA and protein level using qPCR and western blotting assay.
