Immunophenotyping is the examination of heterogeneous cell populations with the goal of determining the presence and relative abundance of the distinct populations of interest.

Antibodies are used to recognize cells based on the kinds of antigens or markers on their surface. This method is applied to basic research and to help in the disease diagnosis.
